Ten things to know about veganism in childhood

Veganism is on the rise in certain parts of the world. Though global data is limited, around

3% of the world's population was estimated to be vegan in 2018. In the US, a 2023 Gallup

poll found that 1% of the population said they followed a vegan diet.

More recently, a survey by The Vegan Society found that around 3% of the UK population

has a plant-based diet – equivalent to approximately two million people.

There are many well-documented benefits to such a choice. For one, eating meat

and dairy is notoriously bad for the planet, while plants offer a much more sustainable

solutionMany people have ethical concerns about the welfare of animals bred for

consumption, and there is evidence that balanced, varied vegan diets have some

health advantages as well.

Nevertheless, isolated cases of severe malnutrition in infants have led some to argue that a

vegan diet is unsafe for children.

However, expert opinion on whether children can stay healthy and follow a vegan diet

varies around the world. While official dietary associations in both America and the UK

argue that a vegan diet, when appropriately planned, is safe for infants and children, in

Germany, France, Belgium and Poland, health authorities have some concerns.

Unfortunately, historically there has been little research on the health impact of a

plant-based diet for children, but that is finally starting to change, with a host of new

studies offering up insights.

But let's back up a little. Vegans do not eat any foods derived from animals. They eschew

meat, fish, dairy and eggs, and instead eat a diet based on plants, as well as fungi, algae

and bacteria. Think vegetables, fruits, nuts, seeds, beans and legumes, but also bread, pasta

and hummus – many foods are accidentally vegan.

So, what does the science say about the effects of a vegan diet in childhood?

25 of the world’s best sandwiches

Watch CNN Original Series “Eva Longoria: Searching for Spain,” following the award-winning actress on a gastronomic pilgrimage across the rich tapestry of Spanish cuisine. Sunday nights at 9 p.m. ET/PT on CNN.

Is there a food more humble yet universally adored than the sandwich?

And while one person’s go-to hamburger snack might be another’s katsu sando or chivito, there’s hardly a country on the planet that doesn’t turn to some type of bread with something stuffed inside it to cure a craving.

Traveling the world’s sandwiches is, in a way, like traveling the world.

To help narrow your choices for the sandwich to plan your next trip around, here are 25 of the world’s best sandwiches:

Bocadillo de jamón Ibérico, Spain

There are ho-hum ham sandwiches and then there’s this simple handheld featuring some of the world’s finest jamón, luxurious Iberian ham from acorn-fed pigs. The thinly sliced meat is piled on crusty bread that’s brushed or drizzled with extra virgin olive oil. Fresh tomatoes and perhaps some cheese can be added, but the ham is undoubtedly the star of this show.

A tuition-free school created by Mark Zuckerberg and Priscilla Chan will shutter next year

In 2016, Mark Zuckerberg and his wife, Priscilla Chan, opened a tuition-free school for low-income families in California’s Bay Area, where Meta is headquartered.

Created under the couple’s philanthropy, the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative (CZI), the Primary School aimed to combine healthcare and education for students “from birth through high school.” Chan, a former pediatrician, once described the organization’s education efforts as combining her two core passions.

Carson Cook, the Primary School’s senior manager of strategy and advancement, confirmed in an interview with CNN that the school began meeting with parents to inform them of the closure last Thursday and said those conversations are ongoing. But he declined to comment on the reasons behind the closure or the timing.

“At the Primary School, our model has always been one that carefully considers the needs of the whole family, and we want to do our absolute best to ensure that every child and their caregiver is supported,” Cook said. “And I think what we just want to say is that that hasn’t changed.”

Cook declined to comment on CZI. The philanthropy has recently undergone a series of significant changes. In February, the organization told employees it would cut internal and external diversity, equity and inclusion efforts.https://edition.cnn.com/2025/04/25/tech/chan-zuckerberg-primary-school-closing/index.htmlThat followed a similar move a month earlier by Zuckerberg’s company Meta — one of several Trump-friendly changes the social media giant has made since the start of this year. Zuckerberg and Chan also attended Trump’s inauguration, where they were seated prominently among other Big Tech leaders.

Chanel and Armani celebrate big milestones at Paris couture week

Haute couture is an enigma to most. Accessible to only a select few (an estimated few thousand people globally) because of the eye-watering price tags that such extraordinary designs command, the fashion designers who partake in the exclusive event in Paris must ensure that strict criteria are met, in order to be approved by the Fédération de la Haute Couture et de la Mode, France’s governing fashion body.

Taking place following men’s fashion week, during which ready-to-wear designs are shown, the haute couture shows serve a wholly different purpose. The pieces are not intended for everyday wear and cannot simply at a department store (couture clients make direct orders and have private fittings). With that, the designs are often more experimental than commercial, and showcase exceptional savoir-faire.

The week had plenty of celebratory moments, including Chanel’s 110 years in haute couture. Presented in the Grand Palais, on a runway that featured a crossing C formed by two monumental staircases, reflecting the house’s double-C logo, the collection was designed by the studio while awaiting the arrival of new designer Matthieu Blazy, who is expected to join by April 2025.

Another big milestone was celebrated by Giorgio Armani, who celebrated 20 years of his couture line Armani Privé with a collection that explored themes of light and shimmer. Titled “Lumières” (French for “light” and “enlightenment”, the 90-year-old designer’s show was held at the newly acquired Palazzo Armani in the 8th arrondissement, a lavish private mansion complete with gilded moldings and a marble staircase.

The collection, comprised of 94 looks, including beaded suits, sleek peplums, silky Mao jackets, crystal-encrusted evening gowns and 1920-inspired headpieces, revisited iconic moments of his career, providing a dialogue between the glamour of more recent and distant pasts, When it comes to Armani’s work, the devil really is in the details.

Patience is a luxury
For Alessandro Michele, the designer of Valentino, luxury means taking time, as he explained backstage after presenting his first couture collection for the Italian house. Under his creative leadership, Valentino now stages one couture show a year, instead of the typical two. Michele compared the experience of haute couture to a ritual, describing the process as a labor of patience.

Nearly 200 Jurassic footprints unearthed on ‘dinosaur highway’

Scientists have unearthed nearly 200 dinosaur footprints, dating back 166 million years to the Middle Jurassic Period, at Dewars Farm Quarry in Oxfordshire, England.

The remarkable find, first spied in 2023 when quarry worker Gary Johnson sensed “unusual bumps” on the ground while extracting limestone for road construction, has been nicknamed the “dinosaur highway” as a nod to the extensive pathways left by these prehistoric creatures.

While other Jurassic pathways have been documented globally, the recent “highway” discovery in Oxfordshire is the largest known dinosaur track site in the United Kingdom.

Around 100 volunteers from the University of Birmingham and the University of Oxford collaborated this past June for one week, excavating the tracks and recording as much information as possible about the expansive site.

The discovery holds particular significance as it aligns with the 200th anniversary of the first-ever described dinosaur, the Megalosaurus, which was found in Oxfordshire in 1824.

“There’s a really long legacy in this area of exciting dinosaur tracks and body fossils,” said Kirsty Edgar, a professor of micropaleontology at the University of Birmingham in England who was involved with the excavation.
